Track Falcons’ Senior Day, Wednesday, April 14, was a positive, upbeat event – made even more so by the opportunity to welcome back their popular (make that “beloved”) Assistant Coach Jerry Cumberland, accompanied by his wife, Cindy, whose professional nursing experience may have saved “Coach Jerry’s” life. “Without her,” Coach Cumberland acknowledged to Sonoran News, “I wouldn’t be here.” Beginning on Nov. 18, 2009, Cumberland underwent four major operations (quintuple heart bypass surgery and removal of his gall bladder) in two weeks! At 14-0, Tennis guys Region champs!
In his 10th season as Head Coach, Boys Tennis, Bob Dice received a special gift from his players: his first undefeated regular season! Sonoran News says, “Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy!” Coach Dice praised the “team effort” of his squad, which ranked 4th in A.I.A. Power Points. Advancing to Friday-Saturday (April 30-May 1) State competition (individual players) are senior Kevin Siebs (singles) and both doubles teams, Connor Weber (SR)-Griffin Dales (SO), Tyler Brock (JR)-Julian Ophals (SR). State (team, 2nd Round) resumes Tuesday, May 4, at The Boulders, 3 p.m. start. Congratulations to Coach Dice and his Tennis Falcons!

LadyBirds hangin’ in! ‘Senior Day’ April 29
Number 13-ranked Lady Falcons travel to #20 Apache Junction, Tuesday, April 27, then come home to finish their regular season against #2 Sunrise Mountain, Wednesday, April 28, and A.J. on “Senior Day,” April 29. Ladies need to snap a four-game losing streak (home-and-away losses to Saguaro and Queen Creek) to remain State Playoffs-eligible at #16 or higher. Camille McIver will get both starts against A.J., with Amber Underdown likely facing Sunrise. Head Coach Danica Gianni to Sonoran News: “We had a good practice Monday. I think they’re ready to get going again.”

Desert Foothills Soccer fall registration and Spring clinics

The Desert Foothills Athletic Club (DFAC) will be holding early registration for the 2010-2011 soccer season for players ages 3 through 17 (after Aug. 1) on Saturday, May 1, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Horseshoe Trails Elementary, Wednesday, May 5, from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at Black Mountain Elementary, and Saturday, May 15, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Horseshoe Trails Elementary. Horseshoe Trails Elementary is located at 5405 E. Pinnacle Vista Dr., Phoenix. Black Mountain Elementary is located at 33606 N. 60th St., Cave Creek.
