AZ ROC investigators perform sweeps
PHOENIX, – On Sat., Dec. 12, 2015, Investigators with the Arizona Registrar of Contractors (AZ ROC) performed random sweeps on individuals performing contracting work in the Arcadia-area of Phoenix.
For several hours on Saturday, two teams of AZ ROC investigators – both licensed and unlicensed – worked together to canvass a section of Phoenix, North of Thomas Rd. from 40th St. to 56th St., below the canal on Saturday.
On Saturday, the Registrar’s investigators made contact with approximately 30 individuals; including homeowners, contractors, and one unlicensed entity.
About 16 professionally licensed contractors were in total compliance and 10 were warned or will have cases opened for violations related to improper advertising, i.e. company truck not listing ROC number, non-complaint signage posted at jobsite and use of incorrect name.
From the sweeps, one cease and desist was issued against an individual believed to be Contracting Without a License. A case has been opened and will be investigated.
In one instance, a licensed contractor, who lives in that neighborhood, flagged down investigators to simply commend the Agency for carrying out the sweep and, otherwise, homeowners appeared receptive and appreciative for the information related to the risks of hiring individuals not licensed.
In general, when performing sweeps, investigators identify areas of high construction activity, whether new or remodels, ensure those working are compliant with Arizona licensing statutes for contractors, and otherwise educate homeowners on their need to use professionally licensed contractors. The Registrar’s Investigators also perform sweeps on a relatively frequent basis at home shows around the state with the most recent occurring in Maricopa County.
