Red Cross asks for blood donations this holiday season

The American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to end the year with real meaning by donating blood for hospital patients in need.

Holiday activities, severe weather and seasonal illnesses, like the flu, can pull people away from their regular blood donation schedules. This creates a greater need for blood donations this time of year, especially around the winter holidays. To encourage donations, all those who come to donate Dec. 23, 2015, through Jan. 3, 2016, will get a long-sleeve Red Cross T-shirt, while supplies last.

Chandler’s Cultural Affairs Director honored with Distinguished Service Award by the Arizona Library Association

CHANDLER – Brenda Brown, City of Chandler Cultural Affairs Director, was awarded the Arizona Library Association’s (AzLA) Newton and Betty Rosenzweig Distinguished Service Award on Nov. 19, 2015, at the organization’s annual conference.

“Humor In The Civil War” presented by Thomas Cartwright

The Scottsdale Civil War Round Table presents Thomas Cartwright at 6:40 p.m. on December 15 in Scottsdale Civic Center Library Auditorium. Cartwright is one of the leading authorities on the Civil War and the Battle of Franklin. He recently joined in partnership with the Lotz House, a Civil War house museum, to take guests on guided tours of the battlefield. Prior to this entrepreneurial effort, Carter was Director of the Carter House from 1997 until 2008.

Public swaps 800 old life jackets for new in 2015 under AZGFD’s Life Jacket Exchange Program

PHOENIX — The Arizona Game and Fish Department swapped approximately 800 old and tattered life jackets with new ones during life jacket exchange events at area lakes this past summer. During the popular events, the public can swap old, less-effective life jackets for new ones. The department began the life jacket exchange program in 2008 to help save lives and to encourage watercraft users to remain safe on the water.

The Horny Toad celebrates 40 years in business

CAVE CREEK – Few restaurants and saloons survive to experience four decades in business. However, The Horny Toad, one of the most famous names in Arizona and beyond, continues to grow and thrive as it prepares to celebrate its longevity as the oldest, original restaurant in Cave Creek, Ariz. Glenn and Marian Price, who purchased The Horny Toad in 1976, had more than 25 years of experience as restaurant owners in Michigan for many years.

Top-5 Arizona winter fishing holes keep reels humming during holidays

In Arizona, winter doesn’t have to mean sending boats and rods and reels into hibernation. While outdoor recreation opportunities across many U.S. states shut down during the season of freeze, Arizona rolls on with trout stockings and water temperatures just warm enough to convince fish to bite during the holidays.

Although fishing tends to slow a tad this time of the year, there are some spots that are winter-friendly.
