WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Matt Salmon (AZ-05) today released the following statement after introducing the Establishing Mandatory Minimums for Illegal Reentry Act.

“32-year-old Kate Steinle’s recent murder was heartbreaking and unconscionable. This case has reminded us of an unfortunate fact –Congress simply cannot afford to leave any ambiguity in statute while trusting the Executive to prudently exercise its discretion. Congress must continue to sharpen existing law and demand accountability from the Executive Branch. Kate’s Law is a step toward that end. By instituting mandatory minimums for those who illegally reenter our nation after already having been deported, we help dissuade those who so casually disregard our laws and continue to victimize Americans.”

In January, an illegal alien who had already been captured and released by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Apolinar Altamirano, murdered Grant Ronnebeck, a 21-year-old QuikTrip clerk in Arizona’s fifth district. Altamirano was a convicted felon who was allowed by ICE to walk the streets for over two years while awaiting a deportation hearing.

On June 25, Rep. Salmon introduced H.R. 2942, the Stop Catch and Release Act (Grant’s Law), a bill to require DHS to keep criminal illegal aliens in custody and complete removal proceedings of such aliens within 90 days of arrest instead of releasing them onto America’s streets.

Just one week ago, Kathryn Steinle was murdered by Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, an illegal alien with seven felony convictions, who had already been deported five times and continued to return to San Francisco because of its well-known status as a “sanctuary city” for illegal immigrants.

Rep. Salmon introduced the Establishing Mandatory Minimums for Illegal Reentry Act (Kate’s Law), a bill that would amend existing law to mandate five-year minimum sentences for individuals who return to the United States illegally after deportation.

Bill O'Reilly started a petition, calling it Kate's Law, addressed to Senator Mitch McConnell and Representative John Boehner. It basically states any undocumented alien who is deported and return to the United States would receive a mandatory five year sentence in a federal prison.
