Scottsdale-chartered Grand Canyon Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution seeks Scottsdale students for participation in the National DAR’s American History and Christopher Columbus essay contests. Contests are open to students in public, private, and parochial schools and registered home study programs and are conducted without regard to race, religion, sex, or national origin.

Students in grades 5, 6, 7, and 8 are eligible to enter the American History essay contest.  The deadline for chapter entries is January 14, 2015.

To commemorate 2015 as the 125th anniversary of Ellis Island as an immigration station, the 2015 American History contest title is “A Child’s Journey through Ellis Island.” One essay at each grade level is selected as the chapter winner and forwarded to the Arizona state American History chairman for state competition.  All students receive a participation certificate and each chapter grade level winner is honored at the chapter’s awards luncheon in March. The chapter has had several first place winners at state level.

DAR partnered with the National Italian American Foundation in 1996 to sponsor the Christopher Columbus essay contest for students in grades 9 through 12.

The 2014-2015 contest title is “Joining Christopher Columbus on His Voyage to the New World.” One chapter winning essay is submitted to the Arizona state American History chairman for judging.  State winners are then judged at division and national level. The deadline for chapter entries is December 12, 2014.

The chapter’s 2013-2014 Christopher Columbus essay contest winner, Anita Ramaswamy, was chosen the National DAR and National Italian American Foundation contest winner.
