Hot town ... summer in Cave Creek

Over the last couple long hot dry months I have caught myself humming the old Loving Spoonful song; ‘ hot town Summer in the City back of my neck getting burned and gritty.....’. It is the dog days of summer, but today has been a cloudy rainy day after a big down pour last night. The desert all around is swelling up and perfuming the air with the ancient scent of wet creosote. Working out in the rain all morning lifts the spirit, and reminds me why I put down roots in the Cave Creek foothills twenty eight years ago.

Cave Creek has lost its way

Our Cave Creek Town Council seems to be sadly out of touch with the community they are elected to represent. The new town manager is properly taking his lead from this town council. Unfortunately, the council seems to believe that Cave Creek is only for cowboy wannabes, booze, loud bars and motorcycles – the “character of Cave Creek” as defined by the vice mayor. And, the town manager doesn’t know any better. There is so much more to this town than that. Let’s start with the Desert Foothills Library.

The Strategic Imperative of ISIS

During the 2012 presidential campaign President Obama repeatedly boasted, “Osama bin Laden is dead and Al-Qaeda is on the run.” He is right on both counts: bin Laden is gone and Al-Qaeda runs stronger than ever. The latest Al-Qaeda iteration, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), conceived by Al-Qaeda in Iraq during the height of Operation Iraqi Freedom, gained strength and experience fighting in the Syrian civil war, a conflict President Obama avoided by dubbing possible intervention as “doing stupid stuff.”

Open border terrorists try to stop deportations!

As you might remember, Arizona passed a law a few years ago that would give the police the authority to inquire into the immigration status of individuals they encounter.

Parts of the law were ruled unconstitutional. Police Officers were prohibited from “racial profiling” and actively seeking out individuals’ border status. There was a portion of the law that survived, however. Part of SB 1070 demands that police officers check the immigration statuses of all those who are stopped in the commission of a crime or misdemeanor.

Spectacularly wrong

“A greeting of peace from Muslim communities in my country: assalaamu alaykum”
The speaker had what one might imagine, given his background, a better insight into Islam, Muslims, and the Middle East than others who had preceded him. He said he was seeking “a new beginning” that was “based on mutual interests and mutual respect” because his nation and those in the Middle East shared “common principles – principles of justice and progress, tolerance and dignity of all human beings.”
