Three arrested in state’s largest-ever food stamp fraud enterprise

PHOENIX – On Aug. 29, Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne announced the arrests of Kameel Sweiss, 51, Ameer Sweis, 22, and Faday Sweiss, 33, all of whom worked at K&S convenience store at 6116 N. 27th Ave. in Phoenix for illegally conducting an enterprise, fraudulent schemes and artifices, money laundering, unlawful use of food stamps and computer tampering.

Bashas’ Inc. enters non-prosecution agreement over meat mislabeling

Bashas’ agreed to disgorge the $1.5 million from sales it derived from its misconduct in the form of restitution payments to area food banks

PHOENIX – Last week, John Leonardo, U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona, announced Bashas’ Inc., a family-owned Arizona corporation that operates over 100 grocery stores in Arizona, California and New Mexico, including AJ’s Fine Foods, has agreed to execute a non-prosecution agreement (NPA) over meat mislabeling practices at certain AJ’s locations between January 2010 and February 2012.

IRS to recognize same-sex marriage for federal tax purposes

WASHINGTON – On Aug. 29, in light of the June 26, 2013 U.S. Supreme Court decision to invalidate a key provision of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, the U.S. Department of the Treasury ruled that same-sex couples, legally married in jurisdictions that recognize their marriages, will be treated as married for federal tax purposes.

Trial circulation plan scheduled for Downtown Scottsdale

A month-long trial of a one-way traffic circulation plan begins today, Sept. 4, in Downtown Scottsdale in an effort to improve safety and circulation.
