diane vaszilyExploring the forest in the summer is often the perfect time to gather and dry flowers, stems, and roots for your medicine bag. The Desert Awareness Committee offers “A Highlands Harvest for Food and Medicine” workshop with Diane Vaszily on Saturday, August 24 from 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Highlands Center for Natural History. This workshop highlights the forest pharmacy and grocery store that surrounds us.

Diane will expand on her popular medicinal plants demonstration this year to include lots of information on edible plants. Many regionally native plants contain nutrients that make them healthy food choices as well as medicines. She will demonstrate techniques for gathering and preparing Prickly Pear fruits (tunas), Mesquite beans, Mormon Tea and Jojoba nuts. In addition, participants can sample the results.

Preregistration is required for this workshop at 928-776-9550. Tuition is $20 for Highlands Center members and $25 for nonmembers. Join them for a fun afternoon of harvesting the bounty of the region!

The Highland Center is located at 1375 S. Walker Road, Prescott, AZ 86303. Call 928-776-9550 or email [email protected].
