CAVE CREEK – Mayor Vincent Francia invited congressional candidate Rep. David Schweikert, R-Ariz. currently serving Arizona’s 5th Congressional District but running in the newly redrawn 6th Congressional District, which includes Cave Creek, to bring citizens one on one contact with a Washington representative.

Schweikert said he has spent a good deal of time in Cave Creek as a state legislator and more recently as Maricopa County Treasurer, helping get several property tax issues cleaned up.

He said there were two things he wanted to share, stating, “We’re in trouble fiscally. It’s math. We have some real issues … Revenues coming to the state are going to change.”
The other issue was the deductibility on municipal bonds – tax exempt bonds.

While Congress was able to squash legislation on it last year, Schweikert said it will be coming back in November.

Schweikert provided citizens with his personal phone number: 480-659-9383 and e-mail address: [email protected] so they could contact him with any concerns they might have.

One of the biggest problems he said are the baby boomers as he pointed out 3,075 Americans turn 65 every day.

And, the baby boomers are all about money, said Schweikert, with the government borrowing about $0.40 on every dollar it spends.

He said we need members in Congress who will suck it up and tell the truth.

Francia asked if Schweikert thought both parties will be able to work together to resolve the looming financial crisis.

Schweikert responded, “This is about those who do math and those who don’t. It’s not about ideology, it’s about a calculator.”

Not until Schweikert left the council chambers did councilmen Steve LaMar and Jim Bruce, both Democrats, join council, which didn’t go unnoticed by several attendees.

Attendees commented about the councilmen’s actions by calling it “extremely disrespectful.”
