Lady Falcons post 3-2 mark at Sunblast tourney; McIver, Goulder set new CSHS marks

‘Softball Marathon’ fundraiser at Varsity Field set for Saturday, March 12

CSHS – Sure, the Lady Falcons had hoped to fare better than 3-2 at Boulder Creek’s Sunblast Tournament, March 3-5; but somehow, they always seem to make their appearance interesting.

After coming out “flat” (Coach Gianni) in their opener, a 2-5 loss to (Yuma) Cibola, the LadyBirds, re-energized, crushed Bradshaw Mountain’s Lady Bears, 11-1. Camille McIver, still nursing a tweaked left quad, was the starting and winning pitcher; Gracie Goulder and Megan Scarpulla homered, Goulder’s fourth of the season tieing Breann Ferradino’s four in 2007; Kristin Hillier plated five RBIs; and Elyssa Hartsock and Scarpulla each stole three bases.

In their second game on Friday, it was “all-McIver,” as the senior ace pitched a five-inning (“mercy rule”) perfect game, believed to be the first ‘perfecta” in Lady Falcon history. The Ladies rolled, 15-0.

In Saturday’s action, the Ladybirds downed Thunderbird, 8-2, with McIver 4-for-4 at the plate, and Amber Underdown, a healthy 3-for-4. But in their nightcap against Paradise Valley, the “exhausted” (Coach Gianni) Ladies fell 3-10 – but not before Goulder belted her record-breaking fifth homer.

At Sunrise Mountain, Tuesday, March 8, the Lady Falcons hung tough with the Lady Mustangs for three innings before falling, 0-8. Coach Gianni: “We ran into a good hitting team; and Camille (McIver) is still working on her (pitching) stride.” On Thursday, March 10, the Ladybirds should “get well” against the visiting newcomers, Shadow Ridge (Surprise).
Mark your calendars for Saturday’s “Softball Marathon,” 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Varsity diamond. There’ll be home run and base running contests, with lunch, beverages and dessert served. Falcon Softball especially welcomes STMS and Little League softballers. Admission is free, with donations to CSHS Softball greatly appreciated. It’s and “annual” good time!
