6th Annual Golf Tournament at Desert Mountain

Are you ready to play handball, racquetball, swim laps, take some great classes or work out with a tremendous view of Black Mountain? The Desert Foothills Family YMCA has it all under one roof! Located at 60th Street and Carefree Highway, this multigenerational center has been a wonderful addition to the community since October 2009.

The Y Angels Board has played a large part in the funding for this center. Please mark your calendars and save the dates for the 6th Annual Y Angels Golf Tournament. This two-day event at Desert Mountain will start with cocktails, dinner, silent and live auction on Saturday, April 17, followed by the golf tournament Monday, April 19, 2010. Entry fee is $500 per person.

Erika Greaves, Y Angels Chairperson reports that “tantalizing and unusual raffle and auction prizes are being assembled and we are planning for a wonderful, typically sunny Arizona golf day.”

Pink-Link.org is the Match.com for Breast Cancer

Vicki Tashman didn’t just survive breast cancer, she beat it. Commanding all the resources and support available to her, she was a prime example of the active and pro-active patient. She interviewed different doctors, attended different support groups, signed up for different studies and never took “no” – or “I don’t know” – for an answer. All this worked to her advantage and she is alive today because of it.

The one thing she felt was missing however during her battle with the disease, was a way to find another woman who had the same type of cancer, was considering the same treatments, feeling the same side effects and processing the same fears. 

When she finished her treatment she decided to do something about that.

“It just occurred to me one day that here we had this unbelievable tool, the Internet, at our disposal, but there was no way for me to find someone who was going through, or had already gone through, the same kind of cancer as me,” Tashman says. “Why should it be easier to find a date online than a compatible mentor who can help you get through chemo?”

Pink-Link (www.pink-link.org) is the outgrowth of this idea and is now the only online searchable database of breast cancer patients and survivors on the Internet.  Completely FREE and CONFIDENTIAL, Pink-Link allows women to enter as much detail as they like about their particular diagnosis and then search for other women who are the same age, living in the same part of the country, taking the same medications, facing the same treatment options.  The site can match women who’re going through treatment simultaneously or can pair a patient with a survivor … or both.

Today, Pink-Link has thousands of members from all over the world. As the database grows, the ability of the site to deliver on its central promise – making a match between women who have or had the same diagnosis – is further realized. Besides the survivor database, the website contains a number of different support resources. They have a personal journal, or blog, that can be shared, private or shared with a password. This enables their members to communicate with friends and family about their current treatment. They also have a member forum where any member can post or read a variety of topics. And finally, they have 4 experts who donate their time to run forums in nutrition, physical exercise, skin care and holistic health.
