“There’s no ‘quit’ in this team!”

Beneath the spectacular ruggedness of the Catalina Mountins, late afternoon, Saturday, May 3: that’s how head Baseball Coach Tom Scala (standing, third from left) praised his Falcons after their 7th inning comeback bid had heartbreakingly fallen two runs short. Canyon del Oro (#5) ousted the #12 ‘Birds from State, 6 – 4. As they’d done all season, Co-Captains Jake Goulder (solo HR, double) and Chris Manship (three singles, 2 RBI) provided “Senior Leadership,” but the Falcons stranded the potential-tying runs at 3rd and 2nd with only one out. G-R-O-A-N! For the ’08 campaign, the Falcons finished a more-than-solid 20-10 (7-5 in Desert Sky). Congratulations, guys! And thanks for some great baseball memories!

Track Falcons shine at Desert Sky

Sending 22 to State

By Pete Mohr

CSHS – When Patty Egan, “Dean (17 years!) of Cactus Shadows Coaches,” e-mails Sonoran News that last week’s Regional (at Shadow Mountain) “were the toughest in which we’ve competed,” you can take her critique to the bank! How competitive were they? Consider this: Girls 4x800 relay (Natalie Omundson, Shan England, Lauren Lazo and Beau Bremer) lowered their CSHS record by a full 0:05 – only to finish second to the Saguaro quartet! Ladies were an impressive runner-up, boys a solid 4th. Paradise Valley, champs in both genders.
Regional “Top Three” in each event move on to State at Mesa Community College (Wed., May 7 and Sat., May 10). Congratulations to Falcon qualifiers: Kyle Short (1st, 3200; 2nd, 1600); Beau Bremer (1st, 300 hurdles); Lacey Modzeleski (1st, triple jump; 2nd, high jump); Lauren Lazo (1st, 400; 3rd, 800; 3rd, 1600); Natalie Omundson (2nd, 3200); Geoff Byers (2nd, 100); Alyssa Colan (2nd, discus); Daniel Pages (3rd, 400); Katie Smith (3rd, pole vault); Girls 4x100, 3rd (Smith, Amber Varnall, Rebecca Wilbanks, Cheyenne Scott). Audrey Noble (4x100) and Kelsey Stephens (4x800) will be alternates.
“At-large” qualifiers: Boys 4x800 (Jordan Bagnall, Walker Bohannan, Ben Cresswell, Keith Omundson); Boys 4x100 (Byers, Ethan Pikoff, Pages, Joshua Reece); Chris LaSita (long jump); Byers (200); Short (800); Natalie Omundson (800, 1600); and Bremer (1600).
Congratulations, Track Falcons! Good luck at State!

“Heartbreak Hotel!” P.V., 1 – Lady Falcons, 0

PARADISE VALLEY – The above headline is borrowed from Basketball Hall of Fame Broadcaster Al McCoy. Head Coach Danica Gianni’s LadyBirds, at P.V., came oh-so-close to winning their 7th in a row. The Lady Trojans trekked up to CSHS, Tuesday, April 29, and defeated the somewhat let-down LadyBirds, 8–1.
“We played great at P.V.!” Coach Gianni praised to Sonoran News, “but our bats (six hits) just weren’t there when we needed ‘em.” In the Lady Trojan 5th, a bunt single, aggressive base running on a fielder’s choice, followed by a ground single into left produced the game’s only run. Would that the LadyBirds could have borrowed just two runs from the 14 they put up at Shadow Mountain on Thursday, April 24!
At home for “Senior Day” (please see accompanying box below), the Lady Falcons played for pride – and wanting to finish their Desert Sky Region record at .500 (7-7), but it wasn’t to be.
Nevertheless, Coach Gianni is rightfully proud of her team’s late-season surge that swept (in order) McClintock, Saguaro and Shadow Mountain.
In A.I.A. Power Point Rankings, the Lady Falcons finished 22nd with 81.1111 power points – slightly less than 10 power points (two wins!) behind State Tournamentqualifying #16 Apollo at 90.0000. For their 4A-Division I inaugural, that was a meaningful accomplishment – and legitimate reason to look forward to 2009.
    Congratulations, Coaches and Ladies!
