‘Don Quixote: A 21st Century Look’ coming this summer

CAVE CREEK – We know school’s out for summer when C. Nicholas Johnson appears with one of his thought provoking and outrageously entertaining multi-media productions at the Cactus Shadows Fine Arts Center. One year, it was Alice, a Sonoran Desert version of Alice in Wonderland with multiple “Alices” and an enormous desert hare, gecko, and scorpion. Last year, gangsters, molls, a red getaway roadster and film noir adventure energized a 40’s themed Cinderella: Not So Noir.
This summer, June 2 -14, members of the Performing Arts Camp will perform Nick’s Don Quixote: A 21st Century Look, inspired by Cervantes’ Don Quixote de la Mancha, the tale of a gentleman who decides to assume the antiquated lifestyle of a chivalrous knight, aided by his bewildered neighbor Sancho. Windmills, madness, comedy, tragedy, self-deception, romance, and satire are magnificent grist for the creative team of professional artists who will be working with the students.
Nick Johnson, Director of Dance at Wichita State University and internationally acclaimed mime, leads Artists in Residence Sabrina Vasquez, Kevin Glenn, Martha Lindsey, Dan Williams, Renee Swann, Liz Lincoln, and cinematographer Vincent Pascoe in the two week creative process, rehearsals and workshops for grades three through twelve, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Fine Arts Center.
The camp fee is $450 and includes rehearsals, workshops in singing, theater movement, dance, mime, set building, and costume construction; a DVD, and tickets to performances at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 14, on the Main Stage at the Cactus Shadows Fine Arts Center, located at 33606 N. 60th Street.     “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” is a joyous interpretation of the story of Joseph and his brothers from the Old Testament,” said Artistic Director Barbara Surloff. “The story, as told in song and dance, inspires everyone that is involved in its production, from the actors on stage, to the costumer, to the audiences.
Joseph is a joyous celebration, and all of us that are involved in bringing it to Starlight are excited about being a part of that celebration.”
“Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” is directed by Starlight veteran and theatre educator Barbara Surloff, along with musical director Christine Powell. Sherry Henderson is choreographing the show – her ninth with Starlight. Co-founder Pat Bennett is producing the show.
“Joseph is relevant in today’s world because it teaches us that being different, enduring hardships, and having dreams to follow will lead us to happiness and success when we believe in ourselves and do the right thing,” said Sallyann Martinez, Starlight Marketing Director. “This is must see for all ages!”

About “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”
Based on the biblical tale of Jacob’s son Joseph and his 11 brothers, this light-hearted, entertaining and endearing musical is the most “colorful” of all time. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s enduringly popular musical favorite began its life in 1967 as a 20-minute “pop cantata” for an elementary school Easter concert. “Joseph” was revived and expanded in the mid-‘70s and eventually made its way to Broadway in 1982. This lively interpretation of the story of Joseph of Canaan has gone on to charm audiences around the world with its excitement, energy, and eclectic musical variety.

    Upcoming Starlight events
